Upcycled Accessories & Knitwear Patterns
Kelly O is a designer and maker based in the colonies where she creates upcycled accessories from plastic bags and designs knitwear for the modern knitter.
Upcycled Accessories
By fusing together several layers of single-use plastic carrier bags, a new ‘fabric’ is created that is significantly more durable while remaining lightweight and waterproof. This new fabric is used to create functional everyday accessories that will last for many years, keeping the original materials out of the landfills and waterways.
Each hand-crafted item is unique, using only the original markings on the bags. They are named after animals that are affected by plastic pollution both on land and in our oceans, helping to draw awareness to the harm these materials cause and the need for change.
Kelly has designed a series of zip pouches, wallets, tote bags, and protective laptop sleeves - all of which are handmade in the Abbeyhill Colonies.

Kelly would be delighted to help you sustainably dispose of your own plastic bags – bring them to her venue during the Colony of Artists and get 10% off all items. Plastic bags, plastic packaging/ mailers, and bubble wrap are all accepted.
Knitting Pattern Designs
Kelly has also designed a collection of contemporary knitting patterns from mittens to jumpers. Samples of the patterns will be available to try on and the patterns will be available for purchase.
Kelly has several designs created exclusively for the Colony of Artists event including a shawl and fingerless mittens inspired by the colonies and their history. This year she will be releasing a new hat pattern inspired by the colonies and using wool from the local yarn shop Ginger Twist. The pattern and kits (including wool) will be available.
