VENUE 11 - Becka’s Insects, Edinburgh Jewellery Repair, 30 London Road
Spider & Insect Creations
Becka Gauld's work stands out from the crowd. Her astonishing and eye catching insects, spiders and webs are clearly informed by her background training as an Ecologist and the flower fairies delight and appeal to all ages. Her novel use of wire, copper, glass, wood, gemstones, beads and other natural materials demonstrate both the flair in her design talents and the astounding skills she has honed through over twenty years of working to create extraordinary creatures out of ordinary things.
Becka creates beautiful and eye-catching insects spiders and webs from silver plated copper wire of 6 different gauges; sheet copper; gemstones and beads; glass marbles, pebbles and sea glass; self collected scottish driftwood, twisted heather stems, moss from my garden, fallen lichen from the woods and leaves and twigs from Edinburgh parks.
These creatures take the form of wall art from just 5cm wide long to over a metre in span for some of the larger webs. Some others are ornaments for a shelf or mirror and others are wearable pieces of art; brooches, earrings rings and cufflinks.
She undertakes every aspect of creating the products by herself from collecting the raw natural materials, to conceiving, designing and creating the creatures to selling and marketing them.
Becka has been making and selling her beasties for 23 years and has exhibited at hundreds of craft shows down the years. She used to do all the big 3D2D ones such as Gardening Scotland, Scone Game Fair and the Assembly rooms as well as other large shows in Edinburgh, London and Glasgow.
Since having kids she has done less face to face shows but concentrate on the galleries she supplies in Brighton, Nottingham, Cromarty, Inverness, Dundee, Cupar, Perth, Pennsylvania (USA) and various others. She also has a thriving Etsy business.
Becka was also a regular on the Royal Mile for over ten years throughout the Fringe until covid since when they no longer hold the craft market.
Her training is in Ecology and each piece is designed as s specific species which gives her work the edge and the informed ability to give each one an almost unnerving sense of life. This means she frequently gets commissions from professionals that study specific species to recreate their subjects in her style.
