Functional Ceramics & Pottery
Sylwia Kolasinka is a woman living with ADHD and she feels that most of the time she doesn’t know what she’s doing! Her journey with ceramics began in 2004, ignited by the tactile allure of clay. Amidst the whirlwind of her mind, clay emerged as a grounding force, offering structure and focus to her restless energy. While exploring various mediums like stained glass or batik, it was the transformative nature of clay that truly captivated her, providing a sanctuary for self-expression and exploration.
Navigating the challenges of impulsivity and distraction, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery, often finding solace in the solitude of her studio. As a self-taught potter, she embraced learning from mistakes, constantly experimenting with diverse techniques—hand building, slip casting, and throwing—driven by an insatiable curiosity and thirst for innovation.
A pivotal moment occurred in 2006 when she encountered the transformative potential of a wood-fired kiln, an experience that deeply resonated with her sensory-seeking nature. Intrigued by the alchemy of working with fire, she realized it was the path forward for her as an artist, providing a visceral connection to the elemental forces of earth, water, fire, and air.
Her artwork serves as a reflection of the dynamic interplay between her ADHD mind and the world around her. Through the process of creation, she seeks to find harmony amidst chaos, channelling her restless energy into a tangible form of expression. Each piece embodies a dialogue between order and spontaneity, capturing the essence of her journey as an artist navigating the complexities of neurodiversity.
Everyday she looks forward to further exploring the transformative power of clay and fire, weaving together the threads of her personal experience with the universal language of art.
