VENUE 45 - Säde Foley Art, 33 Rossie Place

Mixed Media Artist & Maker

Säde Foley is a Finnish artist settled in Edinburgh since 2004 and a resident of lovely Abbeyhill since 2008.  Her art is inspired by details in nature, escapism and her roots and travels in the North. Working in mixed media, she enjoys exploring contrasts and harmonies of colour and pattern while evoking atmospheres and environments that bring  serenity and joy. The organic characteristics of water-based media itself provides another layer of inspiration. She is specifically drawn to the colour blue for its refreshing and calming qualities and association with water, ice, the sky and coldness.

In addition to painting she also creates colourful macrame and crochet earrings made mostly using second-hand beads, thread and recycled cotton cord. This evolving collection is called Hanging Garden as it is inspired by fruits, plants, sunsets, drinks, icy treats and so on. Creating various thread-based crafts from serendipitous second-hand finds provides a more practical and playful outlet to balance the sometimes nebulous nature of painting.

Säde studied Art & Design at foundation level at what was then Telford College and completed a BA Hons in Drawing & Painting at Edinburgh College of Art in 2011.  She has taken part in several group exhibitions such as the RSA Open, ArtSpace2Let, Rock Trust Postcard Exhibition and various student shows during her time at ECA.

She has also organised many solo exhibitions and collaborated with other artists, most recently with Kate Livingstone at Whitespace in 2018.

Since 2021 she has focused on selling her work at regular markets around Edinburgh and stocking items in local shops. Further details on these can be found on her website.
